Despite being in the busy Shinjuku district of Tokyo, Ochiai is a quiet neighbourhood with a small town feel and artistic atmosphere.

The Ochiai neighbourhood is where two major rivers in Tokyo converge, the Miyoshoji and Kanda. This geography allowed a lively fabric dyeing community to flourish in the Edo period. Even today, many artisans continue to create and exhibit their artworks in the area. In February every year this history is celebrated through a local three-day festival called Somenokomichi. The festival really involves the whole community, decorates the streets with a River Gallery and Noren Gallery, and attracts many visitors including dyeing professionals from all over Japan.

The neighbourhood is also home to the literary figure, Hayashi Fumiko and animation artist Akatsuka Fujio.

落合の街

東京新宿の都会にありながら、落合は、芸術の匂いのするとても静かな小さな街です。
落合付近には、東京都に流れ込む妙正寺川と神田川の２つがあります。この立地により、江戸時代には染色の街として栄え、今日でも多くの職人さんが作品を創り、地元で発表しています。この歴史を祝い、毎年２月、「染めの小道」と銘打って３日間お祭りが行われます。川ギャラリー、のれんギャラリーと共に
通りに飾りつけをして、街をあげてお祭りを盛り上げます。日本中の染物氏が集まり、多くの人達が楽しみます。
落合は又、小説家の林芙美子、漫画家の赤塚不二男が住んでいた事でも知られています。
